Book of the Month

January:  Atomic Habits

January is the perfect time to start fresh, which is why this month’s pick is Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s a reminder that small, intentional changes can lead to big transformations. And if you’ve worked with me, you know I’m always bringing up books and podcasts in session—this one is truly one of my all-time favorites.

Why This Book Matters for Therapy

So often in therapy, we focus on the “big picture” goals (reducing anxiety, improving relationships, or finding more balance). But real change usually begins with the tiny shifts we make day by day. Atomic Habits reminds us that it’s not about overhauling your entire life overnight—it’s about choosing small, intentional actions that line up with the person you want to become.

How This Connects to Therapy

In our work together, we often talk about small, doable steps. Whether it’s practicing a calming skill, setting a boundary, or reframing negative self-talk, change doesn’t happen in leaps—it happens in steady steps. This book is a reminder that healing, growth, and hope are built in those tiny daily moments.

A Gentle Invitation

If you decide to read or listen to Atomic Habits this month, consider journaling about one small shift you’d like to make. Ask yourself: What’s one habit that, if I nurtured it, would help me feel more aligned with the person I want to become?  Additional journal prompts are listed below.

Progress doesn’t have to be perfect. Even small steps forward count.

Podcast Options:  If you don't have time to read the book, here are some podcasts that provide some great takeaways from Atomic Habits.

Quotes:

People want the results, but they don’t want the lifestyle that produces the results.”

“You have to fall in love with the process, not just the outcome.”

“Goals are about the results you want. Systems are about the lifestyle you live.”

“Everyone wants the gold medal — few people want the daily training."

Journal Prompts/Reflections

What result do I say I want right now — and what daily lifestyle would naturally produce that result?

Where am I currently out of alignment between what I want and how I’m actually living day-to-day?

(Follow-up: Which specific daily behaviors would need to become “normal” for this outcome to be likely?)

Which parts of the process am I quietly resisting, avoiding, or negotiating with myself about — even though they are exactly what would move me forward?

If I truly became the type of person who naturally achieved this goal, what would a normal Tuesday look like for me?

What would be different about my routines, environment, and standards?

(Follow-up: What is one “identity vote” I can cast today through a small action?)
